In this week's podcast we are responding to the following question: "I have suffered from different types of anxiety off and on for 10 years. Every time I feel like I'm getting a handle on it, it smacks me right in the face again. How do I get past the constant awareness of my own heart beat as well as retraining my brain to not dwell or grip onto negative and irrational thoughts? I feel like I'm always expecting the worst. And have a hard time just enjoying myself."

How to calm anxiety over a racing heart

Many anxiety sufferers feel disturbed by feeling that their heart is racing, one thing that helps reduce both the anxious thoughts and feelings around a racing heart and to calm the heart itself is a simple exercise involving a pressure point.

With thanks to Ayurvedic doctor Vasant Lad here’s what you can do to help yourself feel more calm and in control any time you are feeling anxiety over your heart rate:

  • Make a fist with your left hand and look for where your middle finger touches your palm.

  • Now press that point with the thumb of your right hand for about a minute while you take deep steady breaths.

Further points covered in this podcast:

  • Help with dwelling on negative and irrational thoughts

  • What to do when anxiety comes back and hits you out of the blue
